I've worked in the construction industry for over 10 years now, and I can truly say Dewalt is one of the best tool manufacturers and this drill/driver proves it. I have used this drill both out in the field and in my home and it never fails. The drill has a very long battery life if it comes off of a full, its fairly compact and not too heavy. I usually keep it in a drill pouch on my belt and it doesn't weight down my belt. Its also price great, whether its on Amazon or in stores, $99 for a Dewalt tool is incredible. I brought 2 of these drills for family members to have in there households. I would definitely recommend it.
The DeWalt DC970K-2 is a great drill and driver in a very compact and light (5.2 pound) package. It operates in a high and low speed range and has plenty of torque for anything a typical homeowner or handyman would need it for. I was primarily attracted to its compact footprint, which makes it ideal to fit into tight nooks and crannies, as well as the DeWalt reputation. I have not been disappointed.
It comes with the drill, two 18 volt batteries, and a fast charger, which is very fast indeed compared to other tools I have owned. The batteries themselves retain their charge well and are very long lasting (I haven't timed them, but I've never had one run out doing any normal homeowner-scale project.)
I am a huge fan of this drill and see why my contractor has a variety of DeWalt power tools and little else. I strongly recommend this drill and driver for homeowners: it has great performance at a great price.I bought this drill for my fiance as we are renovating a large house right now (as in 75% of the house was/will be taken down the studs). He had been using one with a slightly lower voltage by another major brand and was forever getting frustrated with it's lack of power. I bought this one for him for his birthday and he's loved it. We've used it for everything imaginable. The battery usually lasts the whole day except for occasions when we are literally using it all day long almost nonstop. His dad, who built his childhood home and is currently remodeling it (a.k.a. has every tool known to man) was pretty impressed with it and wanted to upgrade his to this one too.

drill on my first major black friday 2013
I used this drill on my first major project over Easter weekend and I'm happy with it's performance. I used it to strip paint and rust off the rocker panels on my daily driver so I could perform a little restoration work. The drill just powered right through everything. I had to switch batteries early on, but the fresh battery did most of the project and still retained it's power when it was used for another small project a couple of days ago, and made it through most of that project before needing change. These batteries have reasonably long life compared to my previous drill when being used in severe conditions like this. You will certainly get longer life when you are just driving screws or drilling holes, I was running the drill full speed and it was receiving strong resistance for extended periods of time. ALWAYS run your batteries dead before putting them into the charger! I have NiCad batteries from my old drill that are over 10 years old and still hold a good charge because of this practice! You can't blame DeWalt for your lack of proper maintenance!
Right up front, this drill is not as high quality as the Makita it replaced. But since it cost less money than just the new BATTERIES I needed for the Makita, I didn't expect it to be.
Functionally, it is as good or better than the Makita, but the fit and finish and apparent quality of materials seem to be a bit less. Not enough to matter for the way that I use the tool, maybe a couple of times a week for a few minutes. I'm old enough that it will probably outlast me!
I have observed the slight chuck wobble mentioned in other reviews, but again, for what I use it for, a quarter-inch hole that comes out five or ten thousandths of an inch oversize is of no consequence. If you are a professional and absolute precision is critical, perhaps a different, more expensive tool would better meet your needs.

I've never owned a power drill until I recently moved into a new house recently. I had an electrician come over to install a few outlets and noticed she was using a power drill to screw and unscrew things. So fast, so efficient. I talked to her about the drill and she suggested anything made by DeWalt. I went online and saw the different options.
The electrician said if I was planning on doing general house work I could go with a 12 volt drill. I ended up deciding on the 18 volt due to price and reviews. I don't know what the 12 volt is like, but I love this drill and the fact that it came with 2 batter packs AND attached is a bit that gives you both heads of a screwdriver. I didn't know this when I bought the drill so I went out and bought other bits, but I don't think that's necessary when the basics already come with this.
Would highly suggest to anyone.I am Very pleased with this DeWalt 18 volt drill.
It would be good if one could change the voltage just by using a switch on the charger from 110 to 240 volts instead of having to buy a reducing transformer from 240 volts down to 110 volts.
I think that those from outside the USA should be told that only 110 volt outlet can be used and other countries with differant outlets will need a reducing transformer.
However it was still a lot cheaper having to spend the extra money buying a 240v down to 110v transformer than buying a DeWalt 18 volt battery drill from Australia.

The electrician said if I was planning on doing general house work I could go with a 12 volt drill. I ended up deciding on the 18 volt due to price and reviews. I don't know what the 12 volt is like, but I love this drill and the fact that it came with 2 batter packs AND attached is a bit that gives you both heads of a screwdriver. I didn't know this when I bought the drill so I went out and bought other bits, but I don't think that's necessary when the basics already come with this.
Would highly suggest to anyone.I am Very pleased with this DeWalt 18 volt drill.
It would be good if one could change the voltage just by using a switch on the charger from 110 to 240 volts instead of having to buy a reducing transformer from 240 volts down to 110 volts.
I think that those from outside the USA should be told that only 110 volt outlet can be used and other countries with differant outlets will need a reducing transformer.
However it was still a lot cheaper having to spend the extra money buying a 240v down to 110v transformer than buying a DeWalt 18 volt battery drill from Australia.
Now I can buy other appliances from the USA and use the drop down transformer that I now have.
